Mount Ijen, located in East Java, Indonesia, is one of the most unique and surreal volcanoes on Earth. Standing at around 2,799 meters above sea level, it’s best known for two incredible natural wonders: the electric-blue fire that glows in the darkness and the massive turquoise crater lake that looks straight out of a sci-fi movie.

What makes Ijen truly special is the blue fire phenomenon, caused by burning sulfuric gases that ignite as they emerge from cracks in the crater. It’s only visible at night, which is why most visitors start their trek just after midnight — hiking under a sky full of stars to reach the crater before sunrise.

At the bottom of the crater, you'll also find sulfur miners working in extreme conditions. These local workers carry heavy chunks of solid sulfur up steep paths, giving you a rare glimpse into one of the toughest jobs in the world.

Once the sun rises, the scene completely transforms. The glowing fire disappears, but you're rewarded with breathtaking views of the crater lake, one of the world’s largest highly acidic lakes. The colors shift from milky turquoise to deep teal, surrounded by rugged volcanic cliffs and mist rising from the surface — a view that leaves a lasting impression.
