Explore the Yogyakarta City with Ease

You can choose from several transportation options to explore Yogyakarta. The most popular choice is the Trans Jogja Bus, a convenient and budget-friendly bus service with multiple routes covering major tourist spots and local neighborhoods. With clearly marked bus stops across the city, it’s easy to hop on and off as you go.

For more flexibility, online driving services like Gojek and Grab are widely available. These apps offer online transport options including motorcycles and cars, perfect for short trips or destinations not covered by the bus. These mobile apps allow you to quickly book rides with either motorcycles (GrabBike/Gojek Bike) or private cars, making it easy to get around without needing to navigate fixed bus routes.

For the bus here guide how to used it :

1. Find the Nearest Bus Shelter (Halte)
Trans Jogja buses only stop at official shelters (called
halte). Use Google Maps or ask locals to find the nearest one. Shelters are usually located near major roads, tourist spots, and universities.

2. Prepare Your Payment Method
You can pay for Trans Jogja in two ways:

  • Cash (pay at the counter in the shelter; fare is usually around IDR 3,500)
  • E-money cards such as E-Money Mandiri, BRI Brizzi, BNI TapCash, or Flazz BCA.

3. Enter the Shelter
Go through the main gate of the shelter. If paying cash, buy a ticket at the counter. If using a card, just tap your card on the machine at the entrance.

4. Wait for the Right Bus Line
Each bus has a number, such as
1A, 2B, etc. Check the route map inside the shelter or ask the staff which bus goes to your destination. Buses run every 10–15 minutes depending on the time of day.

5. Board the Bus
Let passengers get off first, then enter the bus. There is a staff member (
petugas) on board who can assist you if needed. Sit in the available seats — priority seats are usually marked for elderly, pregnant women, or disabled passengers.

6. Enjoy the Ride
Trans Jogja buses are air-conditioned and usually clean. You can press the
stop button near the door when your destination is approaching.

7. Get Off at Your Stop
The bus only stops at shelters, so make sure to press the button in advance. Exit calmly and thank the driver or staff if you like.

8. Transferring to Another Line?
You can transfer to another Trans Jogja line for free within the shelter system. Just ask the staff for assistance if you’re not sure.

Tips For Used Yogyakarta Public Transportation:

  • Most shelters are open from 5:30 AM to 9:30 PM.

Traditional Public Transportation

While not "modern" public transport, riding a Becak (pedicab) or Andong (horse-drawn cart) can be a charming and nostalgic way to explore the city’s traditional areas, especially near Malioboro and the Kraton Palace. Though slower and more relaxed than other transport options, they offer a nostalgic throwback to old-world Yogyakarta, allowing you to take in the atmosphere at a leisurely pace. These rides are especially delightful in the evening when the streets are lit, the air is cooler, and street musicians begin to play. Since there’s no official pricing, it's a good idea to negotiate the fare before starting your ride or ask a local for the going rate to avoid overpaying.

Travel on a Low-Cost Budget

One of the best things about exploring Yogyakarta is that it’s incredibly budget-friendly. You can easily travel across the city for less than IDR 10,000 (under $1 USD) using Trans Jogja buses or online transport.

Most rides on Trans Jogja cost only a few thousand rupiah, the fare is extremely affordable—around IDR 3,500 (less than $0.30 USD) per trip, regardless of distance. Otherwise, you can order an online transport at affordable fares for longer distances. With such low-cost budget options, you can focus more on enjoying the city’s culture, food, and friendliness, and less on worrying about how to get around.

Whether you're heading to Malioboro, the Sultan’s Palace, Taman Sari Water Castle, or even taking a day trip to the temples, Yogyakarta’s transportation options let you travel comfortably without overspending. With easy-to-use and low-cost public transportation, your journey through this artistic and historic city will be smooth, enriching, and affordable. So hop on a bus, book an online ride, and get ready to explore every corner of this amazing city!
